Building Cities That Work For Everyone

Building Cities That Work For Everyone

Imagine a world where elected leaders, city staff, and residents work in partnership to foster a shared vision for a connected future with vibrant, livable neighborhoods. Built on transparency and trust, community engagement guides decision-making, ensuring that wealth and influence do not determine outcomes. Supported by this community-driven approach, cities complete projects swiftly and equitably: bike lanes and trails wind through parks and busy streets, sidewalks and multi-use paths  link residential areas to farmers markets to playgrounds. Housing is available where and how it’s needed, at prices that are affordable to everyone. Lively public spaces and efficient transit options connect neighborhoods and people to each other.

This is the future that City Thread is working to achieve. The Playbook is how we get there.

What is the Playbook? Our team walked through the steps and strategies in a series of blog posts this year:

  • Making Cities Work For You starts with an overview of the challenges cities and their leaders face and how they – and we – can do better.

  • The first step is setting a shared goal. Are We There Yet details what this looks like and why it’s important.

  • The heart of the Playbook approach is building a broad and diverse network of partnerships. We explain why in The Power of Coalition Building

  • But creating a coalition is not enough. Investing in a Shared Future details the support members require to show up when, where, and how they are needed.

  • Finally, Crossing the Finish Line brings everything together as cities build quickly. Reviewing, refining, and repeating is the mantra as cities iterate and improve on their process.

Want a quick primer? Creating a City Residents Deserve reviews the steps, provides an example from Providence, RI, and offers top tips.

Our cities face a myriad of challenges. We can change the way those challenges are overcome. City Thread can help. Reach out at hello@citythread.org.
